Last night the Independence Reunion Opening Celebrations were held at the Windsor Park Stadium.
A well organised, fantastic display of our culture and heritage, the stadium was packed.
An amazing sight to see all those Dominican flags waving.
Please check out 'TropicallyTied' amazing photo slideshow of this historical moment. 'TropicallyTied' captures the atmosphere beautifully.

Dominica's Greatest Independence Opening Show Ever...!!!
Did you guys had the opportunity to watch or listen live online to our nature island greatest independence opening show ever at the Windsor Park Stadium.
Mann!!! That’s the first time I have seen so many Dominicans coming together to celebrate one common cause - making Dominica’s 30 years of Independence opening ceremony one most amazing opening ceremony I have every seen!
Dominicans definitely went all out for this Reunion Independence coming out party. They have set the bar so high that I can’t wait to see what will happen when it’s time to celebrate 40 years of Independence.

Dominica - Save The Children Fund
How many Dominicans does it take to raise a child?
In the spirit of Reunion '08, may I ask that each family living abroad sponsor a child to go to preschool? Many studies have been conducted regarding preschool education. Their conclusions are that preschool education, however limited, is better than none at all.
It costs less than $200 US (100 GBP)/year to send a child to preschool FOR A YEAR.
If you are one of 4 siblings, each of you would contribute $5/month for 2 years. That would pay for preschool and uniforms. It is a 2 year commitment. After that, as a family, you may wish to help cover the cost of books, etc.. as the child attends Primary school, which is free.
The child you sponsor would be able to write to you - it be would great if you could write back and build a long term relationship with them.
If we have 100 families who choose to participate, ONE HUNDRED CHILDREN will go to preschool. Our future ministers may be among these children. These children may be governing our country if/when we choose to retire there.
If you are not willing or able to sponsor a child yet, feel free to make a donation to the fund to assist in the process of helping our children have a better life.
Reunion '08 is not just about the next fete - the best rum punch - the flashiest outfit - the most bling.
Where is our collective responsibility as a nation to bring each other up in the world?
How many children can we educate? If we wait for government assistance for everything, we will continue to move at the same pace.
If you wish to help, please contact Doreen Francis @ The Dominica Save The Children Fund via email: domniksave@cwdom.dm
Unfortunately, there isn't a website or online link as funding was discontinued from Canada a while ago. With little funding they have received over the years, a website has not been a priority.
I will speak to Ma Francis to see if we can get that set up, or at least to see how much it will cost to do so. Ma Francis has continued to work tirelessly for our children, at the age of 74, she still works on a voluntary basis with very little help, after all of these years.
I will be posting bank account details shortly. In the meantime, I find that an international money order made payable to 'The Dominica Save the Children Fund' send via Fedex is the safest, quickest way to send them funds without sponsorship.
If you are looking to sponsor a child, Ma Francis will reply to your email with details.
If you don't get a response, please persist because they have server issues from time to time. Please be patient - it's worth it!
Thank you.

Dominica is a very exciting place for the bird watcher not only because for its size and position it has a comparatively rich avifauna, but also because it is a place where anything can turn up, much of the island being explored by very few ornithologists.

Dominica - Eco Tourism Training
Dominica promotes itself as the “nature island,” the new eco-tourism destination in the Caribbean. It’s a marketing strategy designed to provide badly needed jobs in a nation suffering from high unemployment and increasing poverty due to a sharp decline in banana sales, its major export.

3 Rivers Eco Lodge is set on a secluded 6.5 acre plot, in a lush rainforest valley, in Eastern Dominica. We are on the edge of the rainforest, about a mile away from the main road, making it an extremely quiet and peaceful place. The site is bordered by 3 clean rivers and set against a backdrop of rain forested mountains, a twenty minute walk from a spectacular Atlantic beach.

Dominica - Changes Course
We were glad to hear the news that Dominica's government has decided to put a temporary halt to their plans to construct an oil refinery on the island.
The slated $80-million development, funded by Venezuela, had been met with opposition from the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association, who argued that the refinery would dissuade visitors and hurt the reputation of Dominica as the "Nature Isle" of the Caribbean. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit deferred to the DHTA, saying on a local radio station that he believed "fundamentally that the concerns raised by the DHTA cannot be overlooked" and that an environmental assessment would follow.

Renewable Energy Alliance
What is the Renewable Energy Alliance?
The Renewable Energy Alliance (REA) is a business and community development initiative started by the Law Firm of Gabriel J. Christian & Associates, L.L.C. in accordance with its social responsibility ethic. All reasonable scientists and environmentalists now conclude the world is close to the "tipping point" in regards to global warming.
What that means is that we will no longer be able to sustain human life where the polar ice caps continue to melt and global temperatures continue to escalate.
The rise in sea level threatens coastal areas of the United States and other countries, small island states in the Caribbean and Pacific, while temperature increases trigger massive storms. Not to mention, the smog and other pollutants derived from burning fossil fuels which impair our lives.

Dominica - Hurricane
The interim Government was barely two months old when one of the three most destructive hurricanes ever know to hit Dominica, lashed its shores, stripped trees from its mountains and tore the fragile homes of its people apart. Only twice previously had such severe hurricanes struck the island In the 1806 hurricane 131 people died mainly as a result of the Roseau river shifting its course and flooding the capital, and in the 'Great Hurricane" 10 September 1834, widely acknowledged as the worst of all, over 200 live were lost.
At first expected to hit Barbados, the hurricane, code-named David, shot across the southern section of Dominica on 29 August 1979. There was little local radio warning and no operational systems for disaster preparedness. With swirling 150 mile-an-hour winds, David pounded Dominica for six hours from about 9.00 am. Thirty-seven people were killed and an estimated 5,000 injured, some requiring amputation of limbs. Three-quarters of the 75,000 population were left homeless with many others temporarily so, sleeping under rough cover in the open or huddled into the homes of more fortunate friends for weeks and months after the storm. cont./

Dominica - Eastern Caribbean’s Nature & Adventure Island
Millions of years ago, volcanic eruptions unleashed their fury in what’s now the Eastern Caribbean. A towering island rose from the center of the rage. Smack in the path of the trade winds sweeping in from the Atlantic Ocean, the mountainous island was doused with rainfall. Six different types of forests sprouted, providing habitats for thousands of tropical plant species and hundreds of birds. Underwater, marine life thrived on the walls, pinnacles and reefs. This was the beginning of Dominica (dah min NEE kuh).
