Dominica 2011 Population and Housing Census

On August 18th 2010 Dominica Officially launched its 2011 Population and Housing Census following an official launching ceremony at the Fort young Hotel

Census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording of information about a population and is normally the largest data taken by the Government of a country.

The 2011 Population and Housing census will provide vital information including the complete count of the population size and distribution, age structures, educational attainment, development management and other socio-economic status.

This vital information is use for developing government polices and programs, and for determining the growth and distribution of a country’s people by comparing the previous census with the current census statistics. cont./

Dominica - Book Drive Update

People on Island of Dominica to get more than a ton of books...

RHINELANDER - Several communities on the island of Dominica are one page closer to getting more than a ton and a half of books!

Sue and Brent Hanson of Rhinelander began collecting books in the Spring for their daughter Beth, who's working in the Peace Corps in Dominica.

Sue and Brent recently took the books to Wausau where the Good News Group stored them.

In October, the Air Force will fly the books for free to the island, and the people of Dominica should get them in November.

Sue says, "The people there have, you know, school supplies and reading, but this is going to be just something for the children to have on their own, to take home. They don't have a lot of personal books."

Sue says most of the education in Dominica is in English.

Dominica - Literary Festival 2010

I was in Dominica this weekend past to attend the Dominica Literary Festival. It is an event put on by a handful of bibliophiles and patriots led by Alwin Bully, a Caribbean treasure, like Lennox Honeychurch, people with a sensibility and sensitivity directed towards the soul of this region. It was quite an intimate affair, expected to grow as the festival builds visibility and a following.

This two and a half day festival had its highlights, the Jing Ping band, the Choir led by Pearl Christian- hear those young people sing in patois, dancing updated folk. Also an interview by Alwin Bully of Ian Randle who spoke to his life in publishing. Lennox Honeychurch gave a powerpointed talk on private and public libraries- ’Archiving Treasures’. cont./
