Usain Bolt grabs third gold and record

Usain Bolt captured a third gold medal and a third world record after Jamaica claimed men's 4x100m relay gold.

The quartet smashed the previous world mark of 37.40 seconds set by the United States at the 1992 Olympics by a huge margin to set a new benchmark of 37.10.

Nesta Carter ran a strong first leg before passing the baton to Michael Frater, who handed on to Bolt before Powell brought it home.

Dominica - Living Ancestors

Dominica and her women

Dominica is a volcanic island situated at the centre of the Caribbean island chain. For many decades the island has been popularly called “The Nature Isle”, due to its exceptional natural heritage. More recently it is also becoming known as the “Isle of Longevity”.

In a population of 71 000 people the number of centenarians is phenomenally high - 33 certified with birth certificates and church records, 42 more with oral verification from neighbours and family. And more than 100 people in their middle-to-late nineties. The large majority are women.

What makes them live so long? The “staying power” of these women dates back to their history as survivors of some of the worst human rights abuses ever perpetrated. Africans reached the Caribbean as slaves...

UPDATE - 11/08/08

We have recently received a generous grant from one of our key partners in Dominica. This money puts us in a good position to move forward with the Place of Safety and complete the remaining building works.

This money will help to cover building costs, but we still need your support in raising funds to purchase furniture and equipment.
We encourage you to donate to this vital project and help us open the doors to abused, abandoned and neglected children in Dominica.

Jamaica - Usain Bolt surges to gold in new record

Jamaican Usain Bolt left his rivals trailing to win gold in the Olympic 100m final with a new world record.

Bolt was well clear at 60m and although he eased down and started to celebrate 15 metres from the line, he still set a new mark of 9.69 seconds.

Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago was second while American Walter Dix came third but they were well adrift.

"My one aim was just to be a champion. That is what I came here to do," said the 21-year-old Bolt.

"I told you I was going to be number one and I did just that. I got a great start. I was getting good starts all the way up to the final. I was getting better and better. I wasn't bragging... when I thought I had the field covered I was celebrating, it was crazy - phenomenal."

The Daily Mirror took an entire Olympic team out to dinner last night. It was a table for three.

The Caribbean island of Dominica has just two athletes competing in Beijing which is the smallest team at the Games.

But sprinters Chris Lloyd, 27, and Erison Hurtault, 23, embody the Olympic ideal. The duo stood proudly with their tiny nation's coach and flag bearer Jerome Romain at the opening ceremony...

Dominica - Offers Lots of 'Wow' Moments

Island is full of natural wonders...

DOMINICA, West Indies - Rumor has it, once you've mastered driving on Dominica, you can drive anywhere in the world.

It's easy to see why. It is, literally, a jungle. Its roads, most of which are no wider than an alley, crawl over mountains and cling to cliffs tumbling down to the Caribbean Sea. All of their turns are shaped like hairpins, and all of their curves are as blind as the nightfall here, where there are no streetlights or stoplights - only stars. And, just to make things interesting for the 66 percent of the licensed driving world who are accustomed to keeping right, Dominica's former British Commonwealth status means that here, one hugs the curves to the left...

Dominica - As Life Goes By

This is my story of how I came to be a retired but active Storyteller in Newham.

"Ok you can go to England," my mother said, " In your sister's letter she suggested that you should join her. At least you will be able to get a job over there."

I was so happy I jumped with joy. I knew if I came to England there would be a lot of opportunities for me including getting an artificial eye fitted.

I was born in Dominica in the West Indies. This island is not to be confused with the Dominica Republic. Dominica lies between the two French Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. The Island is of volcanic formation consisting of 366 rivers of which a few have fresh water lakes and hot springs.
