Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth in Portsmouth was the stage for the last final of this year's independence cultural dance competition, which took place last night.
Large crowds have attended this year's finals, which is an encouraging sign that Dominicans are still very much attached to their culture.
Both Ashton Riviere, acting mayor for Portsmouth, and Ian Dougles, minister for tourism representing the honourable minister for community development, spoke of the importance of culture.
"Culture defines a people", Riviere stated, "... and culture must be passed on."
For his part, Douglas spoke of the event as "a celebration of the richness and uniqueness of Dominica culture" which, he said, we should "try and preserve for posterity."
He reminded the Dominican people that each person is a "link in the chain that builds Dominica" and the country's most precious asset it is human resources.
Ashton Riviere also emphasized the importance of young people participating in these events: "young people need to be involved for culture to survive for generations to come." cont./
